Sow, Raines named Athletes of the Week

WATERLOO, Ont. (February 25, 2018) - Men's basketball guard Ali Sow of Ottawa, Ont., and swimmer Jasmine Raines of Kitchener, Ont., have been named the Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 25, 2018.
Sow was an offensive powerhouse last week as the purple and gold played a pair of playoff games. In the first round in the OUA postseason, the rookie guard was the key catalyst in aiding the team to set a single game playoff points record when he locked in 19 points, four assists, and three rebounds in a 102-76 win over McMaster. The global studies major then racked up 22 points, 3 rebounds and one assist in the OUA Quarter-finals as Laurier was eliminated following a 91-73 loss to the No. 3 Brock Badgers. With an outstanding 396 points on the season before averaging 20.5 points in his first two playoff games while shooting 52.2 percent from the floor, Sow is one to keep an eye on in the upcoming 2018-19 campaign.
This is Sow's fourth time this season that he has been named the Male Athlete of the Week.
Raines continued her season success as the breaststroke specialist won a U SPORTS bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke atthe 2018 U SPORTS Championships. The second year swimmers posted a time of 2:27.84 making her the first Laurier swimmer to win a medal at nationals since 2005. The health science major also swam in two 'B' finals, finishing 12th in the 100m breaststroke and 13th in the 50m breaststroke. Over the course of the three-day meet, Raines accumulated 56 points in the team standings as Laurier finished 20th overall.
This is Raines' fifth time earning Female Athlete of the Week honours in her career at Laurier, and third time this season.
