Raines, Norval show well at U SPORTS Championships
Golden Hawks duo put together impressive swims competing amongst some of the best swimmers in Canada

TORONTO, Ont. (February 26, 2017) - Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks swimmers Jasmine Raines and Connor Norval both put together impressive performances at the U SPORTS Championships, hosted by the Toronto Varsity Blues, this past weekend at Varsity Pool.
Norval, a rookie from Richmond Hill, Ont., swam four personal best times at his first appearance at the national championships. The economics major opened up the meet on Thursday with a 38th place finish in the 200m freestyle thanks to a time of one minute, 57.47 seconds. He also placed 43rd in the 100m butterfly on Thursday after posting a time of 58.32.
He followed up those performances with a pair of 29th place showings in the 200m butterfly and the 1500m freestyle. Norval posted a time of 2:06.96 in the butterfly on Friday before finishing in 16.17.34 in the freestyle on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Raines, who won bronze in the 200m breaststroke on Friday, also swam in two ‘B’ finals during the championships. On Thursday she finished 12th in the 100m breaststroke thanks to a time of 1:10.94 before finishing 13th in the 50m breaststroke on Saturday after touching the wall in 33.17.
Raines also competed in the 200m individual medley on Saturday where she placed 31st after a time of 2:28.97.
Her three finals swims in the breaststroke events accumulated 56 points in the women’s team standings for the Golden Hawks to place Laurier 20th overall amongst competing universities.
