TORONTO (February 23, 2018) - For the first time in 13 years, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks swimming program captured a medal at the U SPORTS Championships as Jasmine Raines won bronze in the 200m breaststroke on Friday night at Varsity Pool.
Raines, a second year swimmer out of Kitchener, Ont., was matched up against some big names in Canadian swimming in the race, including Kelsey Wog, a silver medalist at the 2016 World Championships in the distance.
The OUA record holder in the distance qualified third for the final in the preliminaries on Friday morning after posting the third fastest time at two minutes, 29.75 seconds.
In the ‘A’ final, Raines lowered that time by nearly two seconds, capturing Laurier’s first medal at the national championships as she touched the wall in 2:27.84, finishing behind Manitoba’s Wog and UBC’s Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson, a 2016 Canadian Olympian. That swim was just 0.34 seconds off her OUA record time that she posted two weeks ago at the conference championships when she won gold for the second consecutive year.
Her medal-winning swim makes her the first Golden Hawk to medal at the national championships since Kristy MacLennan won bronze in the 200m butterfly at the 2005 championships.
Raines, who finished 12th in the 100m breaststroke on Thursday night, will also swim in the 50m breaststroke and the 200m individual medley on the final day of the championships on Saturday.
