THUNDER BAY, Ont. (February 22, 2018) - On Wednesday evening, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team suffered a 74-60 defeat to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in the first round of the OUA playoffs, eliminating them from playoff contention.

In defeat, the Hawks were led offensively by Rachel Woodburn, a second-year guard out of Ajax, Ont. A player known to be effective in multiple areas of the game, Woodburn produced team-highs with 13 points, four assists, and three steals.

Playing in her final game as a Golden Hawk, the school’s all-time leading scorer Nicole Morrison (Hamilton) picked up 11 points and collected a team-high five rebounds.

Skye Johns, a third-year forward out of North Bay, produced her highest-scoring output of the season for Laurier, finishing with 10 points.

On the other end, the Hawks struggled to contain the conference’s leading scorer and rebounder, Leashja Grant. A third-year forward out of Nassau, Bahamas, Grant shot 12-25 from the field and finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds.

Aside from Grant, three other Thunderwolves ended up with double-digit points. Jerika Baldin (Brantford, Ont.) had 13, Tiffany Reynolds (Toronto, Ont.) contributed with 11 off the bench, and Nikki Ylagan (Missisauga, Ont.) knocked down a pair of threes on route to a 10-point performance.

Now for Laurier, the focus turns to next year. In addition to Morrison, several other key members of the team are graduating, including Sarah Dillon (Welland, Ont.), Lauren Jamieson (Oakville, Ont.), Melissa Pare (LaSalle, Ont.), Irena Rynkiewicz (Mississauga, Ont.), and Alex Spadaro (Grimsby, Ont.) meaning that next year's team will look very different for the purple and gold.
