SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. (February 18, 2018) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s curling team had their chance at a four-peat as OUA Champions snuffed out in the quarter-finals as they lost 5-4 in extra ends to the Waterloo Warriors at the Community First Curling Centre.

Laurier, featuring skip Matt Hall of Kitchener, Ont., third Jordie Lyon-Hatcher of Ottawa, second Kenny Malcolmson of Toronto, and lead Connor Lawes of Sundridge, Ont., entered the playoff round as the fourth seed out of Pool B after posting a 3-3 record. Meanwhile, they were facing a Warriors team that went 6-1 in the round robin to take top spot in Pool A.

The match was wide open throughout the opening half with the only score coming courtesy of the Hawks when they stole one in the fourth end to lead 1-0 at the break.

After another blank in the fifth end, the Warriors finally found the scoreboard, picking up two to take the lead.

Laurier responded in the seventh with a big score of three and appeared headed to victory, just needing to hold Waterloo to a single in the final end.

Down to skip stones in the eighth, Hall faced a double to win the contest with his last but he hit the top stone too narrow giving Waterloo skip John Willsey an open draw to force an extra end.

In the ninth end, Hall had to draw through a port to the four foot for the victory but his attempt rubbed on a guard up top and stopped just short of out-counting the Warriors stone in the back four foot, giving Waterloo the victory.

The loss means the purple and gold fail to advance to the U SPORTS/Curling Canada Championship for the first time since 2013 after the team had picked up either a gold or silver medal at four consecutive provincial championships.
