THUNDER BAY, Ont. (February 18, 2018) – The final weekend of the regular season provided nothing but positives for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s basketball team as they closed out the regular season with a 74-55 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday night at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.

The win was the Hawks second straight near 20-point win over Lakehead and third straight overall, helping the purple and gold post their best single-season record since the 2011-2012 campaign at 12-12.

Early on, the purple and gold overcame another relatively slow start to take a three-point lead over the T’Wolves (2-22) after one.

A strong defensive evening, holding Lakehead to 30 percent shooting, allowed the Hawks to continue stretching their lead through the second and third quarters.

Ali Sow (Ottawa, Ont.) had one of his finest games of the season, scoring 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting to break teammate Tevaun Kokko’s (Markham, Ont.) rookie single-season scoring record, finishing the year with 393 points. Kokko had set a new mark just last season when he finished with 383 points.

Sow finished the season averaging 16.5 points per game, good for 13th in the entire OUA.

Physically dominant on defence and on the glass, the Hawks had built an insurmountable lead by the start of the fourth quarter. Ntore Habimana (Mississauga, Ont.) led Laurier on the boards, pulling down 12 in just 21 minutes of action.

With Windsor’s upset victory against the U SPORTS No. 2 Brock Badgers on Saturday, the Hawks will remain as the OUA West No. 4 seed heading into the playoffs. They will have their hands full when they host the No. 5 seed McMaster Marauders (10-14) in the first round. The Marauders are one of the hottest teams in the OUA right now, having won eight of their final nine games of the season.

The matchup goes on Wednesday night from the newly reopened Athletic Complex gym. Tip is at 7:00 p.m.
