THUNDER BAY, Ont. (February 18, 2018) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team’s matchup with the Lakehead Thunderwolves Saturday night at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse in Thunder Bay was almost a mirror image of the game between the two teams 24 hours prior. Despite being edged by a score of 62-59, the Hawks once again proved that the margin between the OUA West’s No. 3 and 6 seeds is extremely slim ahead of the teams’ first round playoff matchup on Wednesday.

Compared to the night before, Saturday’s matchup started similarly slow on the offensive front. Both teams were unable to get their shots to fall, each shooting under 30 percent from the field in the first half as the T’Wolves (16-8) held a 23-20 edge at halftime.

Nicole Morrison (Hamilton), a night removed from setting the Laurier women’s basketball all-time career scoring record, provided the offensive spark for the Hawks (10-14) in the second half, scoring 13 points in the third quarter.

The fifth-year guard posted an impressive stat line Saturday, with 21 points, five rebounds, and seven assists on the evening. The effort cemented Morrison’s place among the OUA's all-time leading scorers as she finished her career with 1394 points, good for tenth all-time in conference history.

With the Hawks down just one heading to the fourth, Lakehead managed to hold the purple and gold at bay over the final 10 minutes, building up a seven-point lead that was able to weather last minute triples from Maya Day (Kitchener, Ont.) and Sarah Dillion (Welland, Ont.).

The T’Wolves, who will serve as hosts for the first-round clash with Laurier, were paced Saturday by 16 points and 20 rebounds from Leashja Grant (Nassau, BHS), along with 16 points from Lily Gruber-Schulz (Grand Marais, Minn.).

The Hawks kick off their postseason campaign Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in Thunder Bay.
