WATERLOO, Ont. (February 11, 2018) – Men’s hockey goalie Colin Furlong of Cambridge, Ont., and swimmer Jasmine Raines of Kitchener, Ont., have been named the Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 11, 2018.

Furlong helped Laurier put an end to their six-game losing streak as he won a pair of games during the team's final week of the regular season. In Wednesday's Battle at the Aud against Waterloo, Furlong was the backbone of the team as he denied 37 shots on goal to help the team to a 4-2 victory. In the last game of the regular season against Lakehead, the communication studies major was rock solid between the pipes stopping 43 of the 44 shots on goal, a season-best for saves in a game, as Laurier picked up a 4-1 win. The two wins secured fourth place in the OUA West for the Hawks and home ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.

This is Furlong’s fourth time earning Male Athlete of the Week honours in his career at Laurier, and his first time this season.

Raines has carried over the success of her rookie season to her sophomore year with the purple and gold and shone for the Hawks at the OUA Championships. The breaststroke specialist won a paid of medals including gold in the 200m breaststroke and silver in the 100m breaststroke. Her performance in the 200m breaststroke was particularly impressive as she broke her own OUA record, winning in two minutes, 27.50 seconds, nearly three seconds faster than the silver medal swimmer. The health science major also finished fifth in the 50m breaststroke and 11th in the 200m individual medley. With her three career gold medals at the OUA Championships in the past two seasons, she ranks second for most gold medals by a Laurier swimmer at the conference championships since 2001.

This is Raines’ fourth time earning Female Athlete of the Week honours in her career at Laurier, and second time this season.
