LONDON, Ont. (February 10, 2018) – Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks second year swimmer Jasmine Raines continued her outstanding run of success at the OUA Championships, repeating as the 200m breaststroke gold medalist on Day 2 of the meet Friday night.

Raines, a native of Kitchener, Ont., managed to best herself in the process as she lowered her own OUA record, set last year, by 0.13 seconds as she won the race in two minutes, 27.50 seconds. That time was nearly three seconds faster than the silver medalist, Olivvya Chow from McMaster, who edged out Raines for gold in the 100m breaststroke on Thursday.

Her victory on Friday night meant Raines became the first Golden Hawk to repeat as OUA Champion since Whitney Rich accomplished the feat, winning the 100m breaststroke in four consecutive years between 2008 and 2011. She also now owns four career medals at the OUA Championships (three gold, one silver), the fourth most by a Laurier swimmer since 2001.

Two Laurier men managed to pick up individual points for their team on Friday night as rookies Ethan Locis of Cambridge, Ont., and Connor Norval of Richmond Hill, Ont., both swam in ‘B’ finals.

Locis had a strong showing in the 100m backstroke, winning the ‘B’ final in a time of 57.91 seconds. Meanwhile, Norval finished 14th in the 200m butterfly, posting a time of 2:07.45.

Laurier also earned points in the 4x200m freestyle relays with the men finishing eighth while the women finished ninth.

Overall, Laurier’s women are sitting eighth overall in the team standings with 96 points while the men sit ninth with 86.

The OUA Swimming Championships wrap up on Saturday at Western University with preliminary races beginning at 10 a.m. while finals get underway at 5 p.m.

The finals will be webcast live on
