LONDON, Ont. (February 9, 2018) - Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks second year swimmer Jasmine Raines opened up the 2018 OUA Swimming Championships with a silver medal performance on Day 1 Thursday evening at Western University.

One year after picking up a pair of gold medals in her rookie season, Raines, a native of Kitchener, Ont., was looking to take the first step to repeating that performance in the 100m breaststroke. Clocking a time of one minute, 9.14 seconds, Raines lowered her gold-medal winning time from a year ago but it wasn’t quite enough to knock off McMaster’s Olivvya Chow who took home gold in an OUA record time of 1:08.44.

Second year Nathalie Stackhouse of London, Ont., swam in the ‘B’ final of the same discipline and improved her placing by two spots from 2017 as she finished 16th in 1:14.83.

Laurier’s only other swimmer to compete in a finals swim on Thursday night was third year Max Hughes of Toronto. Competing in the 400m individual medley, Hughes finished 13th in a time of 4:40.24.

The highlight of the evening in the relays came from the men’s team in the 4x100m medley relay where the team of Ethan Locis of Cambridge, Ont., Kenney Tam of Markham, Ont., Nick Misner of Brantford, Ont., and Jacob Eby of Kingston, Ont., finished sixth. Their time of 3:53.83 was over five seconds faster than their seed time and set a new school record in the discipline.

The results from Day 1 leave Laurier sitting eighth in the women’s team standings with 58 points and ninth in the men’s standings with 52 points.

Day 2 action from Western continues on Friday with preliminary swims scheduled for 10 a.m. and the finals getting underway live on OUA.tv at 6 p.m.
