WATERLOO, Ont. (February 8, 2018) – For the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s basketball team, Wednesday night’s contest against the Western Mustangs at the University of Waterloo Physical Activities Complex was a forgettable one. Unable to overcome a halftime deficit, the Hawks dropped their third game in a row by the score of 93-84.

The matchup began at a breakneck pace with both teams putting up points in bunches and it was the Mustangs (14-7) holding a slim 27-25 margin after the opening 10 minutes.

The game remained tight through most of the second quarter, in no small part to the double figures posted by Matt Minutillo (Brantford, Ont.) and Kemel Archer (Brampton, Ont.) in the first half alone.

However, Western put their foot on the accelerator in the final minutes of the half, ripping off a 14-3 run in four minutes to lead by 13 at recess.

The Hawks (9-12) were finding it very difficult to keep the Mustangs offence at bay in this one. Shooting 51 percent from the floor, what was most impressive from Western was their commitment to moving the ball. They finished the evening with 26 assists as a team, a number rarely reached at the university level.

Nikola Farkic (Kitchener, Ont.) spearheaded the attack with 10 assists, while Henry Tan (Cookstown, Ont.) and Omar Shiddo (Toronto, Ont.) had 20 and 19 points respectively to lead Western in scoring.

The purple and gold had shown a propensity to stage dramatic comebacks in the past, but it was not to be on Wednesday night with the Mustangs shooting away any possibilities as they stretched the lead to as much as 20 in the fourth.

Archer finished with a game-high 21 points along with eight boards, while Tevaun Kokko (Markham, Ont.) added 18 points in the loss.

The Hawks will now look forward to Sunday afternoon’s Senior’s Day clash with the Guelph Gryphons, seeking to get back on the right path heading into the playoffs.

The game will be played at RIM Park with tip scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
