KITCHENER, Ont. (January 25, 2018) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s basketball team were finally slowed down after a five-game winning streak Wednesday afternoon at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium by the McMaster Marauders, who, despite a late Laurier surge, were able to come away with the 75-71 victory on the road.

The Marauders (4-13) did their best to try and slow down the Hawks (8-9) as they limited Laurier's offence to just 33 percent shooting on the afternoon, forcing 18 turnovers.

On the other end, McMaster had four starters score in double figures, led by Miles Seward (Toronto), who had a game-high 25 points to go along with eight rebounds after missing his team’s previous matchup with Laurier.

That combination of spreading the wealth on offence to go along slowing the Hawks down on defence saw the Marauders consistently increase their lead in each of the first three quarters.

Trailing by 11 heading into the fourth, the purple and gold were able to capture lightning in a bottle during the final frame. Fueled by 25 combined second-half points from Ali Sow (Ottawa, Ont.) and Kemel Archer (Brampton, Ont.), the Hawks staged a furious comeback.

A couple free throws by Tevaun Kokko (Markham, Ont.) got the purple and gold back even at 71 with just 40 seconds remaining. However, the Hawks innate ability to find ways to win during their string of victories did not help them Wednesday. A couple very costly turnovers in the final minute gave McMaster the opportunities to steal the victory and they took advantage.

The purple and gold will need to reset quickly now as they look to start a new winning streak on Friday night in the Battle of Waterloo against the Waterloo Warriors (7-9).

Tip goes at 8:00 p.m. from the UW Physical Activities Complex.
