GUELPH, Ont. (January 19, 2018) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey team were overwhelmed by the home team and the 4,715 fans backing them as they lost 5-0 to the No. 8 Guelph Gryphons at their annual Frosty Mug game on Thursday.

With momentum on the side of the Gryphons all game as the third-largest crowd to watch an OUA men's hockey game roared, the Hawks (13-6-2) saw their three-game win streak snapped as they fell five points behind Guelph (16-4-1) for first place in the West division.

The Gryphons were unstoppable in the opening 20 minutes as they outshot the Golden Hawks 19-7 and jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Scott Simmonds (Uxbridge, Ont.), Marc Stevens (Turkey Point, Ont.) and Manny Gialedakis (Woodbridge, Ont.).

Looking to switch the momentum to start the second, Laurier head coach Greg Puhalski switched up his netminders, replacing starter Chris Festarini (Oakville, Ont.) with Colin Furlong (Cambridge, Ont.). However, the change didn't have the desired effect as the Gryphons scored early in the second to squash any hopes of a comeback.

Guelph would add a third powerplay marker in the final frame to round out the scoring.

Festarini took the loss for Laurier as he stopped 16 of the 19 shots on net before being pulled. Furlong didn't fare much better for the Hawks, allowing two goals on 10 shots.

On the other side of the ice, Guelph netminder Andrew Masters of Kitchener, Ont., took a shutout win by denying all 26 shots on net.

Next up, the Hawks will return to home ice to play the Waterloo Warriors (6-11-3) for the third time this season where they hope to bring Coach Greg Puhalski his 100th career regular season victory behind the Golden Hawks bench.

The puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 20.
