PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. (January 8, 2017) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s curling program will have two alumni wearing the red and white of Team Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics after John Morris qualified for PyeongChang after winning the Canad Innns Mixed Doubles Trials with teammate Kaitlyn Lawes on Sunday afternoon.
Morris, who was a member of the Golden Hawks curling team from 1998 until 2002, joins former Laurier teammate Brent Laing on Team Canada after picking up an 8-6 victory over Brad Gushue and Val Sweeting in the final at Stride Place. Laing qualified for the Olympics as a member of Team Kevin Koe after winning the 2017 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings back in December.
This marks the second time that Morris, who also competed in the 2017 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings with his four-player team, will compete for Canada at the Olympics after winning gold as the third for Kevin Martin in Vancouver in 2010.
“It feels fantastic. It was a tough year to be honest with you. You have your sights set on winning those team trials, that was our main goal going into this year, but now with this new discipline, it’s such a wonderful new discipline for our sport,” said Morris about the second chance.
Morris and Lawes will be the first team to represent Canada in mixed doubles curling, which makes its Olympic debut next month in South Korea. Competition in the event will get underway on February 8, one day before the Opening Ceremonies. A complete schedule is available here.
