WATERLOO, Ont. (January 7, 2018) – Despite a 44-save shutout from rookie netminder Hannah Miller, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team couldn’t pick up the victory Sunday night as they lost 1-0 in a shootout to the Ryerson Rams at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.

It marked the second time this season that Laurier has suffered a 1-0 shootout loss to the Rams, falling by the identical scoreline in Toronto back in October.

Miller, a native of Georgetown, Ont., was spectacular at times for the purple and gold as she turned the Rams aside time after time through regulation and overtime. She was particularly strong in the first period when Laurier was outplayed and outshot by a 15-4 margin.

The Hawks created a number of high-quality scoring chances of their own, including a 3-on-1 break in the final minute of regulation but failed to beat Ryerson goalie Rachel Seeley of Ottawa, who finished with 21 saves for the shutout.

When regulation and overtime couldn’t solve anything, the teams proceeded to the shootout and the two teams were tied again after three attempts.

Ryeron’s fourth shooter, Sarah McGilvary of Stouffville, Ont., beat Miller with a backhand deke before Laurier’s Emily Woodhouse of St. Marys, Ont., was stopped by Seeley to give the Rams the victory.

For Miller, the performance raised her save percentage to a sparkling 0.956, a mark that ranks her second overall in the country behind only Saskatchewan’s Jessica Vance.

The overtime loss moves Laurier to 1-1-9-2 on the season, giving them seven points, equal with the Windsor Lancers (1-1-12-2). The win bumps Ryerson to 4-4-4-2 on the year and into a three-way tie for sixth in the conference.

Laurier returns to action on Friday, January 12 when they host the Nipissing Lakers (7-2-4-1) at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. and tickets for the game can be purchased at
