BURLINGTON, Ont. (January 4, 2018) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team will begin their quest for a second Yates Cup championship in three seasons on home field as Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced the 2018 conference schedule on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Hawks, who have reached the Yates Cup final in consecutive seasons, kick off the upcoming season at University Stadium against the Ottawa Gee-Gees in Week 1. Laurier and Ottawa have faced each other just once over the past five years, a 65-30 win for the purple and gold at Knight-Newbrough Field in 2015. Thanks to that victory, the Hawks own a three-game winning streak against the Gee-Gees.

Week 2 sees Laurier hit the road on Labour Day weekend as they travel to Kingston to face the Queen’s Gaels for a second consecutive year. The purple and gold have won three straight games against the Gaels, including two consecutive wins at Richardson Stadium.

Following a bye week in Week 3, Laurier returns home for the Battle of Waterloo in Week 4 as they take on their cross-town rivals, the Waterloo Warriors. The Golden Hawks have owned the rivalry over the past 14 years, winning 14 consecutive games to extend their all-time record against Waterloo to 42-14-1.

The competition intensifies for the purple and gold beginning in Week 5 with head coach Michael Faulds’ squad heading down Hwy 6 to battle the McMaster Marauders, a team Laurier has eliminated in the OUA Semifinals each of the last two seasons.

Week 6 will be a special one for the Hawks and the entire Laurier community as the purple and gold host the Guelph Gryphons on Homecoming weekend. These two teams have played each other tough since the beginning of this decade with four of the seven meetings being decided by five points or less.

A trip to Ottawa is on deck for Laurier in Week 7 as they take on the Carleton Ravens on Thanksgiving weekend. Laurier has won all three meetings against the Ravens since their return to OUA football but the last two meetings have been decided by a combined four points.

Laurier closes out their home schedule Week 8 with a matchup against the Windsor Lancers. One of the Hawks’ two non-combatants a year ago, the purple and gold snapped a four-game losing skid against Windsor with a 38-9 win over the Lancers back in 2016.

The final game of the regular season is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated across the conference in 2018 as Laurier heads to London to take on the Western Mustangs in a rematch of the last two Yates Cup finals. With both the Mustangs and Hawks having finished first and second respectively in the OUA regular season the last two years, this game has the potential to determined first place in the conference once again.

The Hawks’ two non-combatants for 2018 will be the Toronto Varsity Blues and the York Lions.

Details on purchasing season tickets and single-game tickets for the 2018 season will be announced later this year. Stay tuned to for complete details.
