GUELPH, Ont. (January 3, 2018) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team opened up 2018 with a loss on Wednesday night as they fell 3-1 to the No. 8 Guelph Gryphons on the road.

Playing their first game in a month following the holiday break, the Hawks showed some rust in this contest as they were heavily outshot by the Gryphons 30-13. However, rookie netminder Hannah Miller of Georgetown, Ont., was on top of her game keeping her team in the contest for much of the night.

After falling behind 1-0 in the opening period, Laurier evened the contest thanks to a great finish from Emily Woodhouse of St. Marys, Ont., late in the second period. The second year forward deposited a rebound into the top of the net past Guelph goalie Valerie Lamenta of Montreal, to send the teams into the final frame tied at one.

Looking to pick up their second straight upset of a nationally-ranked team, the Hawks needed a big effort in the third period but it was the Gryphons who carried the play. Midway through the period, Kelly Gribbons of Port Elgin, Ont., scored her eighth of the year to give Guelph the lead before Ashlee Lawrence of Owen Sound, Ont., iced the contest with a goal late in the third.

Kaitlin Lowy of Toronto, also scored for the Gryphons.

Miller finished the contest with 27 saves in a losing effort for Laurier while Lamenta earned the victory stopping 12 shots.

The loss drops Laurier’s record to 1-1-9-1 on the year as they remain in last place in the OUA while Guelph improves to 8-1-4-0.

Up next for the purple and gold, they will return to Waterloo for their first game on home ice in 2018 when they welcome the Ryerson Rams (3-3-4-2) to town on Sunday, January 7. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.
