It has been an incredible year for Laurier Squash taking home team and individual medals on both the men’s and women’s side.  This would not have been possible without Laurier alumni, Gabe Platt, who was recently been presented the Outstanding Achievement Award by Squash Ontario for his tireless contributions to Laurier Squash.

Gabe first started the Laurier Squash Club back in 2012 with a few of his friends with the goal of competing competitively and starting a new squash tradition at Laurier. He went on to play the #1 position for the Laurier team taking on some of Canada’s best players. In 2015 he capped off his university career representing Laurier at the BDO Northfield Cup, a Professional Squash Association International Event, which attracts top players from across the world.

Fast forward five years, the club has taken massive strides and is now a household name in the Jester’s University Squash League battling against the top university teams in Canada. Gabe is now the head coach of the Men’s Team and has already led the Men to a Division 3 gold medal. He and the team are vying to improve on the result and make a run in Division 2 this season.

This is an incredible award and a testament to Gabe’s dedication to growing squash at Laurier. He is an active member within the Kitchener-Waterloo squash community forming relationships with numerous clubs and pros. This has benefitted the men and women’s team greatly with access to new opportunities and resources. He spearheaded the Waterloo Corporate Cup, bringing in preeminent firms, to raise funds for the Laurier Squash Club. The tournament just successfully ran for a second year this past November.

A Graduate of the Double Degree Program receiving a BBA from Wilfrid Laurier University and a BMath from the University of Waterloo as well as a CPA designation holder, this is another amazing achievement to add to the list. Congratulations Gabe!
