OTTAWA (December 11, 2017) - Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s curling team alumni Brent Laing will don the red and white for Team Canada this February at the 2018 Winter Olympics after qualifying as a member of Team Kevin Koe at the 2017 Roar of the Rings on Sunday night in Ottawa.
Laing, who curled with the Golden Hawks from 1997 to 2001, plays second for skip Kevin Koe, whose rink defeated Team Mike McEwen 7-6 to earn the right to represent Canada in PyeongChang, South Korea.
“I can say for sure that nothing can be harder,” Laing said regarding the level of competition this past week in Ottawa. “That says nothing about the competition at the Olympics because it’s going to be just as hard, but it can’t be harder than this.”
With the victory in Ottawa, Laing officially becomes the second Laurier alumni to represent Canada in curling at the Winter Olympics. He follows in the footsteps of former Golden Hawk and long-time teammate John Morris, who played third for Kevin Martin’s rink that captured gold in Vancouver in 2010.
Former Laurier women’s curler Cheryl Kreviazuk, who served as an alternate this past week for Team Rachel Homan who won the women’s trials earlier on Sunday, has the potential to serve as an alternate for the team in PyeongChang. However, that decision will be made internally by Curling Canada and will be announced following the Mixed Doubles Trials set for January 2-7, 2018 in Portage la Prairie, Man.
