WATERLOO, Ont. (December 7, 2017) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s and women’s basketball teams, along with other varsity athletes and student groups on campus, helped to make last Friday’s Shoot for the Cure games one of the most successful in the teams’ history.
Thanks to a number of fundraising initiatives during the teams’ games against the Waterloo Warriors, as well as in the lead up to the game, the Golden Hawks raised $1316.20, a sizeable increase over the $445 donated a year ago.
Helping to support the Shoot for the Cure cause, a U SPORTS program that supports Breast Cancer Awareness programs, were members of the men’s and women’s rugby team as well as the Women’s Athletic Association (WAA). Carter Smith and Andrew Quattrin from men’s rugby shaved their heads in support of Shoot for the Cure while Sydney Bang from women’s rugby, along with women’s basketball guard Sarah Dillon, cut their hair and donated it to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.
On top of the online donations raised in the lead up to the game by the basketball teams, WAA raised money during the doubleheader basketball games with a bake sale while proceeds from the halftime bean bag toss’, as well as from a raffle, helped to make the event one of the most successful ever for the Hawks.
The U SPORTS women’s basketball Shoot for the Cure campaign has proven an overwhelming success since it was launched in the fall of 2007, with over $1.1 million in donations to date. Once again for the 2017-18 season, all 47 U SPORTS women’s basketball schools will once again participate in the program for the seventh year in a row.
