WATERLOO, Ont. (November 19, 2017) - Men’s hockey defenceman Alex Annecchiarico of Richmond Hill, Ont., and women’s basketball guard Nicole Morrison of Hamilton, have been named the Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 19, 2017.

Annecchiarico put up an impressive performance on the weekend as the men’s hockey team played two games. Against Brock University, he played a key role on Laurier’s defence as the team was six for six on the penalty kill moving the Hawks to tenth in the league. When facing Western, the second-year communications major scored his first career goal with the Hawks to open the scoring that resulted in a 3-2 victory for the purple and goal. Thanks to his performance, the Golden Hawks picked up three points on the weekend and moved into a tie for first in the OUA West with 18 points.

This is Annecchiarico’s first time earning Male Athlete of the Week Honours.

Morrison, a fifth-year communications major, was on fire this weekend. Against York  University, the guard scored 14 points adding two assists and two rebounds. Morrison then hit the spotlight when the purple and gold disrupted No. 10 Queen’s University’s undefeated record as they won 72-70 where she lead the team with 37 points, three rebounds, four assists, two steals, and shot 14-for-30 from the field, making five threes. The 37 points smashed Laurier's single-game scoring record, breaking the previous mark of 32 held by Laurier’s all-time leading scorer Meaghan Mcgrath, and set the school record for field goals made in a game with 14. With her strong performance, Morrison is currently first in the OUA with 140 points to her name, is leading in assists with an average of 4.9 per game and is second in points per game average at 20.0.
This is Morrison’s eighth time earning Female Athlete of the Week Honours.
