It was a huge weekend over at the Laurier Athletic Complex as both women's and men's basketball teams had their home opener Friday and Saturday night.

The Golden Hawks kicked off their regular season play with a bang as they took on the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday night. The women were sure to impress the crowd during the first half of the game as they kept a close score with the Gee-Gees. Throughout the second half, they didn't give Ottawa the chance to slip away as they pushed to the very last second of the game, forcing the Gee-Gees to play in overtime.

Laurier did not skip a beat as the teams went back and forth during overtime, taking Ottawa to double-overtime! As the Golden Hawks maintained their energy, they were finally given the chance to take down the Gee-Gees with a final score of 87-83. After a game like that,

Laurier's men's basketball team knew they had to bring their A-game. The first two quarters of the game were tight as the Hawks fought to pull ahead of the Gee-Gees but the second half was when they truly excelled. The Golden Hawks played a hard game and ended up on top with a score 80-75.

Golden Hawk fans swarmed the bleachers on Friday night to support their teams during the home opener. The energy was high and fans made plenty of noise as the rooted for the Hawks. It was hard to miss Laurier students, Megan Tu and Yasmin Abdelhamid, during the game as they cheered on the Hawks at every point. Dressed in their purple and gold, Megan and Yasmin did an amazing job supporting their friends on the court! For being great fans, these Golden Hawks went home as Wilf's Fans of the Game.

The following evening, the Golden Hawks took on some tough competition, the Carleton Ravens. The women's team was first to take on the Ravens in this battle of the birds. The game took off fairly quickly as big numbers were put up by both teams. Although the Hawks put up a fight, they fell short of the Ravens in a final score of 50-77. Next up, the men's team knew they had their work cut out for them as they took on the number 1 ranked team in Ontario. The Hawks kept a close score during the first half of the game but in the last two quarters fell behind. After an intense game, the Golden Hawks ended off the game 64-100.

The Athletic Complex was filled with Laurier fans on Saturday night as the Golden Hawks took on the Ravens. Among the crowd, cheering on her boyfriend, Vlad Matovic loud and proud, was Tamara Bugarski. Alongside Matovic's parents, Tamara wore the Golden Hawk on her sweater with pride as she supported the team during their big weekend. Tamara ended up going home as the Wilf's Fan of the Game with a t-shirt and gift card to Wilf's Restaurant & Bar.

Do you want to go home with the title of Wilf's Fan of the Game? Your next chance is this Friday night, November 17th, during the men's basketball game at 8pm as the Golden Hawks take on the York Lions. #TameTheLions
