WATERLOO, Ont. (November 10, 2017) – Anthony Conti scored the lone goal of the shootout in the seventh round as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s hockey team outlasted the Brock Badgers 5-4 on Friday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
Conti, a third year native of North Vancouver, B.C., was the only player to find the back of the net during the shootout in what was a stark contrast to regulation play that saw the teams go back and forth on the scoreboard. His shot beat Badgers netminder Alex Brooks-Potts of Burlington, Ont., to help Laurier move to 6-2-1 on the year.
Rookie Anthony Sorrention of Woodbridge, Ont., continued his strong start to his Laurier career as he scored twice in regulation for the purple and gold while Will Cook of Port Stanley, Ont., and Neil Aird of Ancaster, Ont., added singles for the Hawks who roared out to a 3-0 lead in the contest.
Brandon Robinson of Pickering, Ont., chipped in with a pair of assists.
Brock (3-4-3) got goals from four different players as they rallied from a three-goal deficit and a two-goal deficit to force overtime.
Laurier netminder Colin Furlong of Cambridge, Ont., who stopped 35 of 39 shots through regulation, was spectacular in the shootout making seven saves to pick up the win.
Brooks-Potts took the loss in relief as he made 22 saves. Clint Windsor of Hamilton, got the start and allowed three goals on 13 shots in the first period.
Special teams were a big factor in the contest as each team tallied twice with the man advantage. Laurier finished the game 2-for-3 on the powerplay while the Badgers were a perfect 2-for-2.
The Hawks will be right back in action on Saturday night as they host the Windsor Lancers (3-4-2) for the first time since the Lancers upset Laurier in the first round of the OUA playoffs last year.
Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
