Hawks goalie Hannah Miller makes 27 saves in the loss

Toronto, Ont. (November 4th, 2017) - On Saturday afternoon, playing near the Toronto/Vaughn border, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team suffered a 2-0 defeat to the York Lions. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 0-3-1 on the season while the Lions get their first win and improve to 1-4-1. 

Despite the loss, Laurier goaltender Hannah Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) was sensational between the pipes. The first-year communication studies major made 27 saves as only Kelsey McHolm (Winnipeg, Man) was able to get the puck past the netminder. Assisting on McHolm’s goal were Chelsea Tucker (Alliston, Ont.) and Erin Locke (Toronto, Ont.) at 15:16 of the second period. 

The Lions added to their lead in the dying seconds of the game when Laurier pulled their goalie. Coming at 19:51 of the third period, Cynthia St-Cyr (New Liskeard, Ont.) provided the empty-net goal on assists by Avery Reeves (Mount Forest, Ont.) and Jenna Gray (London, Ont.)

The Hawks were in tough against Lauren Dubie, the second-year goalie who looked unbeatable on the afternoon.  The London, Ontario native stopped 14 shots and earned her first shutout of the season.

Next up for the Hawks is a showdown Sunday evening against the Guelph Gryphons. Puck-drop is set for 7:07 pm in Guelph.
