NORTH BAY, Ont. (November 4, 2017) – On Friday Night, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team earned a decisive victory against the Nipissing Lakers. Playing on the road in the Lakers’ home opener, the Hawks put on a clinical defensive performance while also shooting well from the field. Laurier won 83-40, gaining their first-win of the year.

The Hawks defence was stifling throughout the contest. The Lakers shot 21.7 percent from the field and only made 13 of 60 attempts for the game. From three-point range it was the same story. The Hawks held the Lakers to 20 percent from behind the arc, as Nipissing only made five three-pointers on 25 attempts.

On the other end, Laurier shot the ball well and were aggressive on the offensive end, consistently finding themselves at the free-throw line. For the game, the Hawks shot 43.5 percent overall, 44.4 percent from downtown and converted on 21 of 33 free throws.
The Hawks were led by Nicole Morrison and Brianna Iannazzo. Morrison, the fifth-year guard out of Hamilton, was the high scorer for the game, amassing 21 points and dishing out six assists. Iannazzo meanwhile, was a sparkplug off the bench. The Thornhill, Ont., native produced 19 points, with 12 points coming off four made threes.

For Nipissing, guard Heidi Smith made four threes of her own. The 3rd year guard out of Virden, Manitoba earned all her points via the three-point shot, scoring 12 for the game.

With the win, the Hawks improve to 1-1 on the season. The game was the first of the year for the Lakers who fall to 0-1.

Next up for Laurier is a matchup against the Laurentian Voyageurs. Tip-off will be 6 p.m. Saturday night.
