GUELPH, Ont. (October 30, 2017) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s soccer team had their season come to an end on Sunday afternoon as they lost 5-0 to the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA Quarter-finals.
Laurier fell behind early in this contest when Victoria Hinchliffe of Guelph, Ont., opened the scoring for Guelph just seven minutes into the match.
The Hawks had their opportunities to tie the game in the first half as both Pauline McCordic of North Vancouver, B.C., and Nicole Lyon of Kitchener, Ont., had chances but Guelph keeper Libby Brennemen of Baden, Ont., was there with the save each time.
Needing to rally in the second half, Laurier’s comeback chances were dealt a swift blow by the Gryphons as they scored twice in the opening 15 minutes and Guelph would add two more goals late to seal the win and advance to the OUA Final Four.
The result means that Laurier fails to advance to the OUA Final Four tournament in back-to-back years for the first time since the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
