WHKY falls short against Waterloo
Laurier suffers first defeat in Battle of Waterloo series with 2-1 loss to Warriors

WATERLOO, Ont. (October 28, 2017) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team suffered their third consecutive loss to open the season on Saturday night as they fell 2-1 on home ice to the Waterloo Warriors.

Rachel Marriott of Waterloo, Ont., and Stephanie Digness of Aldergrove, B.C., tallied markers for the visiting Warriors, with Digness’ goal on the powerplay late in the second period standing up as the winner.

Jaden Head of Whitby, Ont., replied for Laurier midway through the third period to give the Hawks life late in the contest.

However, despite getting a powerplay in the final three minutes of the game, the Hawks were unable to tie the score as their record fell to 0-0-2-1.

Rookie Cohen Myers of Shakespeare, Ont., made her second start of the season in net for the purple and gold and made 29 saves.

Stephanie Sluys of Clinton, Ont., picked up the win for Waterloo as she turned aside 21 shots to help Waterloo improve to 1-1-1-0 on the year.

Waterloo’s victory gives them their first win of the year against Laurier in the Battle of Waterloo challenge. The Hawks continue to lead the series with a 5-1-4 record through 10 matchups this season.

Laurier will be back in action next Saturday, November 4, when they head to Toronto to face the York Lions. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m. and the game can be seen live on OUA.tv.
