WINDSOR, Ont. (October 29, 2017) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks cross country teams achieved what they set out to do at the OUA Championships on Saturday as both the men’s and women’s teams finished in the Top 10 to qualify for the U SPORTS Championships.

In the women’s 8km race, Bettina Boucher of Whitby, Ont., became just the second Golden Hawk to ever earn an OUA All-Star as she finished 12th to take home second team recognition. Boucher, a third year native of Whitby, Ont., joins Tara Ross from 2001 as the only members of the Golden Hawks, male or female, to earn all-star honours after crossing the finish line in 28:51.1.

Other Laurier runners to score included Sydney Pattison of Rockwood, Ont., in 42nd, Elizabeth Laurie of Kitchener, Ont., in 44th, Lauren Kerker of Port Elgin, Ont., in 59th and Hayley Carrescia of Etobicoke, Ont., in 66th.

The result marks a one-position improvement for the Golden Hawks at the OUA Championships compared to a year ago.

In the men’s 10km race, the purple and gold earned a seventh place finish in the team standings on the strength of a great race from Joe Sheridan of Waterloo, Ont. The fourth year veteran solidified his best-ever result at the provincial championship as he crossed the line in 25th in a time of 31 minutes, 42.7 seconds.

Other runners to score for the Hawks included Daniel Hilbers of Port Elgin, Ont., in 45th, Sandy Freeland of Waterloo, Ont., in 54th, Joseph Hardy of Talbotville, Ont., in 56th and Michael Charanduk of Etobicoke, Ont., in 60th.

The seventh place finish marks a three-position improvement for the purple and gold from a year ago.

Laurier will now have two weeks to prepare for the U SPORTS Championships scheduled for Sunday, November 12 at the University of Victoria.
