TORONTO, Ont. (October 23, 2017)- The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team earned a point on the road, falling 1-0 in a shootout to the Ryerson Rams on Sunday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

After three periods of play, neither the Hawks nor the Rams were able to get on the scoreboard, forcing the two teams to compete in three on three overtime in an effort to break the tie. Here, the 0-0 deadlock remained intact by the end of extra time, which lead to a shootout making the final decision on who was to claim the win.

After five shooters from either side, it was Ryerson’s Brooklyn  Gemmill (Cambridge, Ont.) who managed to slide the puck past Laurier’s netminder, Hannah Miller (Georgetown, Ont.).

This goal proved to be the deciding factor of the night, as the Hawks were unable to respond to the Rams’ goal. While the home team was allotted the 1-0 victory, Laurier took home their first point of the season.

Despite the loss, Laurier’s goaltending was rock solid, as first year Hannah Miller recorded 34 saves and earned her first career shutout in what was her first career, and OUA, start.

The purple and gold are now 0-0-1-1 on the season, and will look to earn their first win of the season this Saturday, during the next segment of the Battle of Waterloo. The Hawks play host to the Waterloo Warriors at SunLife Financial Arena, where puck drop is set for 7:07pm.
