WATERLOO, Ont. (October 23, 2017) – With the third seed in the OUA West Division secured due to a draw by the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, the Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer team's matchup with the Brock Badgers at University Stadium Sunday afternoon was technically a wash as far as the standings were concerned. However, it provided a great opportunity for many players to gain valuable experience with the regulars getting the day off with a playoff game looming on Wednesday. The Badgers, who were running at full-strength took advantage to end their season with a 1-0 victory on the road.

One player who took advantage of her opportunity was backup keeper Kaitlyn Dickey (Grimsby, Ont.) making her first start for Laurier. The Badgers (5-9-2) were able to consistently place pressure on the Hawks (6-3-7) back line, but Dickey was up to the task, showing off her athleticism in stopping 10 of 11 shots sent her way.

Weathering a heavy storm in the first half, the purple and gold conceded an early goal to Brock midfielder Ashley Harris (Niagara Falls, Ont.), but no more. The new-look Hawks lineup looked much more comfortable and composed in the second half, holding the Badgers at bay. However, the purple and gold just could not muster enough opportunities on offence, ultimately falling by the score line of 1-0.

The Hawks’ graduating players were given a nice tribute at halftime on Senior'’s Day, but Sunday will not be their last match in a Laurier uniform. The third seed will host the sixth-seeded McMaster Marauders (5-6-5) in a first round playoff matchup at home on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., with the winner moving onto the quarter-finals on Sunday.

Stay tuned to for more playoff coverage.
