WATERLOO, Ont (October 18, 2017) – The Wilfrid Laurier Athletic and Recreation Department has added to their personal training packages with the implementation of BarBelles; a new 8 week women’s strength training program.
With the introduction of BarBelles, once a week registered participants meet as a group to work on barbell lifts. These lifts include squat, bench press, deadlift, and overhead press. These multi-joint, full body movements are chosen because of their foundation for other fitness areas, everyday functionality, and objective results. Overall, BarBelles aims to improve upon strength and provide a foundation for many different fitness areas.
The goal for this program is two-fold: to educate and empower. The program aims to educate and provide tools to pursue personal goals, as well as to empower individuals to achieve such goals.
This program was brought by Chrissy McEwan, Laurier Alumni and current Ohio University Masters’ student. McEwen previously worked in the Athletics and Recreation Department as a Personal Trainer, Fitness Centre Attendant and Basketball RIC. In addition, while attending Laurier, McEwen successfully ran several group training programs which included Stadium Conditioning and High Performance Training (HPT).
“The overall goal of this program is to educate and empower females to become strong(her) mentally and physically,” said McEwan when asked about why she started the program. “Through my experience as a personal trainer and strength coach, the one consistent trend I have found with my clients is that the weight room can be a very intimidating place for females. This program equips the students with classroom knowledge as well as practical experience so they feel comfortable in every section of the weight room. With the program being all females, it adds a sense of belonging and empowerment.”
With the success of this program, Laurier Recreation hopes to run more small-group training programs in the future.
