WINDSOR, Ont. (Sunday, October 15 2017) – The Laurier Golden Hawks women’s soccer team pulled out another late goal from their basket of tricks on Sunday afternoon at Windsor’s Alumni Field. Going down a goal in the first half, the Hawks struck back in the final five minutes of play for the second day in a row, finishing with a 1-1 draw against the Windsor Lancers.

The Lancers (3-4-7) came into the contest losers of a couple in a row, but it came quickly apparent that they were up for the challenge in this one, pressuring the Hawks (6-2-7) early on.

A mirror image to the match the Hawks played 24 hours earlier in London. Lancers veteran Becca Fuerth (Woodslee, Ont.) struck for the home team in the 35th to put the purple and gold in an early hole.

The Hawks again proved that they are a great second-half team, clamping down on Windsor defensively while chipping away with opportunities on the other end. For the second day in a row, the purple and gold showed their flare for the dramatics.

Yesterday it was Maxine Murchie (Kitchener, Ont.) saving the Hawks late. Today, it was Pauline McCordic’s (North Vancouver, B.C.) turn to play the hero, beating Kristina Brooks (Chatham, Ont.) in net for Windsor to send Laurier to a fourth consecutive draw late in the season.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, draws have not allowed them to create any separation in the divisional race. Depending on next week’s results they could finish anywhere from second to fourth in the division, but they will have to rely on other results to determine their standing. They need a win in their season finale next weekend against Brock (4-9-1) to have any chance at the second seed and a first round bye.

The good news? Next Sunday’s regular season finale against the Badgers at 1:00pm will not be the last home game the Hawks play this season. It is guaranteed that there will be playoff soccer at University Stadium this season!
