Windsor, Ont. (October 15th, 2017) - As a sports fan, you can never be disappointed when your team does what they have to do. When the squad doesn’t exceed expectations per say, but performs up to its standards and earns the result that they need. On Sunday afternoon in Windsor, Ont., the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks did exactly that as they drew a 1-1 tie against the Lancers.
In a road match against the Windsor Lancers, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s soccer team earned a 0-0 draw, gaining a key point in their quest to make the 2017/2018 OUA West playoffs. With the draw, the Golden Hawks are now tied with the Lancers and the Brock Badgers, all possessing 16 points on the season. The top two of the three teams will make the playoffs. While the Lancers have two games remaining, the Badgers and the Hawks have just one, a showdown between the two teams that will take place next weekend at University Stadium. The winning team will secure a playoff spot, while the losing team will become in danger of missing the postseason.
Sunday’s game was a defensive battle and featured limited offensive opportunities for both team. The Golden Hawks were outshot seven to four, and had three corners compared to the Lancers, who were awarded seven. Luca Moco-Montanaro (Woodbridge, Ont.) led the Hawks offensively with two shots, both on net. Antonio Hecimovic (New Hamburg, Ont.) and Nikola Miokovic (Kitchener, Ont.) each recorded a shot on target as well.
In goal, Rocco Strazzella (Woodbridge, Ont.) earned his second clean-sheet in as many days, making three saves.
At the other end, Kyle Vizirakis (St. Joseph, Ont.) made four stops for Windsor.
Next week’s regular season finale is scheduled for a 3:15 pm Sunday kickoff, in Waterloo. Don’t expect it to be the final time the Hawks play this season.
