Waterloo, Ont. (October 1st,2017) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s soccer team lost 3-1 to the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday afternoon. Under sunny skies at the Guelph soccer complex, the defending OUA champion Gryphons were impressive, appearing to be a threat to potentially repeat in 2017.

The Gryphons opened the scoring just before halftime, in the 42nd minute. On an assist from Atchu Siva (Brampton, Ont.), it was Jonathan Amoo (Mississauga, Ont.) who provided the finishing touch, placing the ball past Laurier keeper Ryan Mandryk (Ancaster, Ont.).

The scoring continued early in the second half when Amoo again found himself on the ball, this time on an assist from Willem Grant (Ottawa, Ont.). Amoo blasted a shot into the Laurier goal, giving the Gryphons a 2-0 lead.

The lead was cut in half in the 82nd minute courtesy of Nikola Miokovic (Kitchener, Ont.). Laith Adi (Mississauga, Ont.) provided the assist for Miokovic, who scored his sixth of the season, tying him for sixth in the league in goals scored.

Laurier’s hopes for a comeback were squashed in the 86th minute when Guelph gained a two-goal advantage. Siva earned his second assist of the game, passing to Ryan Vyrostko (Waterloo, Ont.) who took advantage, scoring the Gryphons third goal of the game.

Despite the loss, Mandryk was impressive in goal. He faced several shots and made four saves, preventing the game from getting out of hand.

Guelph had 11 shots for the game, while Laurier totalled six.

Next up for the Hawks is a game against Waterloo at University Stadium. The game is schedule for 1:15 pm next Friday, October 6th. It will be the 2017 version of the annual school-day game, meaning the stands will be packed with several local high-school students. A rowdy atmosphere is expected.
