Cant, Clayton named Athletes of the Week
MBASE Robert Cant scores a home run to give the Hawks a lead and eventually earn a win over Guelph; WLAX Abby Clayton scores five goals in two contests

WATERLOO, Ont. (September 18, 2017) – Men’s baseball shortstop Robert Cant, and women’s lacrosse attacker Abby Clayton have been announced as this week’s Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 17, 2017.

Hailing from Oakville, Ont., Cant rose to the occasion in the weekend matchups against Guelph. In the first game where the Hawks won 12-6, the geography major had five at bats, two runs, two hits, one runs batted and one walk. Moving onto the second win of the weekend, Cant had four at bats, one run, two hits and two runs batted. His homerun gave a lead to the Hawks ultimately resulting in a 5-4 win. With these double victories, Laurier’s men’s baseball team moves to second in the OUA with ten points to their name off a 5-1 record. 

This is Cant’s first time earning Male Athlete of the Week Honours.

Clayton, a kinesiology and physical education major, was instrumental in both of the lacrosse wins on the weekend, where the athlete hustled in transition by throwing herself into interceptions. Clayton scored two goals in the Hawks 10-9win over Western, marking the first victory thepurple and gold have earned over the Mustangs since defeating them in the OUA final in 2010. This was followed up by a 12-7 win against the Brock Badgers where the Fergus, Ont. native scored three more goals, sweeping the weekend with an addition of five points to her name. 

This is Clayton’s second time earning Female Athlete of the Week Honours.
