Waterloo, Ont. (September 16th, 2017) - On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Waterloo, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s soccer team put on an impressive performance, ultimately gaining a key three points. Facing off against the Windsor Lancers, the Hawks played a superb defensive game and capitalized on their scoring chance, resulting in a 3-1 victory.

The goal scoring began in the 30th minute when Aaron Johnston (Thunder Bay, Ont.) fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard box but it was blocked by a Lancer defender. The ball fell to Golden Hawk forward Nikola Miokovic (Kitchener, Ont.) who was able to get off a shot on goalkeeper Kyle Vizirakis (Windsor, Ont.). The keeper made the stop but couldn’t hold on the ball and Johnston, waiting on the doorstep, buried home the rebound.

The Lancers tied it up right before half in the 44th minute thanks to Dylan Satta (Tecumseh, Ont.) who blasted a shot past a diving Rocco Strazzella (Woodbridge, Ont.). It would be the last of the first half scoring as the two teams headed to the break nodded up at one goal apiece.

The beginning of the second half featured some conversative play and lots of battles taking place in the middle of field, lacking any real goal threats. Suddenly, that changed when Vizirakis received a pass back from a defender and Nikola Miokovic began applying pressure on the Lancer goalkeeper. Worried about the pressure, Vizikaris shoved Miokovic away as the striker was close to stealing the ball. The play was an obvious foul and since the occurrence took place inside the box, the Golden Hawks were granted a penalty shot. Miokovic took advantage of the penalty, perfectly placing a low drive into the bottom corner past the keeper’s outstretched arm.

Johnston would add his second goal of the game in the 86th minute, providing the finishing touch on a terrific individual performance.

Johnston had a very impactful game. The second year forward totaled five shots overall, four of them on goal, and scored his first two goals of the season. Additionally, Miokovic was very aggressive offensively, putting pressure on the backline, getting six shots off in the game (four of them on net), and scoring his third goal of the year. Antonio Hecimovic (New Hamburg, Ont.) and Luca Moco-Montanaro (Woodbridge, Ont.) also had a shot on goal as well. Windsor totaled six shots for the game.
The backline was anchored as always by keeper Rocco Strazella who made two saves. Centre-back Tahrik Rodriques (Scarborough, Ont.) was impressive defensively, in addition to instructing his teammates and making sure the Golden Hawks kept their formation.

With the win, the purple and gold improve to 1-5-1 on the season while the Lancers fall to 2-5-1. From here, the Hawks will host a purple jersey counterpart at University Stadium tomorrow afternoon. It’ll be Laurier versus Western on Sunday September 17th at 3:15 pm.
