WATERLOO, Ont. (September 5, 2017)- The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks and the University of Waterloo Warriors have officially announced a year-long rivalry for the 2017-18 season.

The Battle of Waterloo will be much more than just another cross-town rival game for the Warriors and Golden Hawks this coming U SPORTS season.

The occupants of University Avenue have upped the ante with a Battle of Waterloo series meaning every game involving a team sport (baseball, basketball, football, hockey, soccer) between the two combatants will count.  The team with the best record at the end of the competition will be deemed the winner of the series and awarded the Battle of Waterloo trophy.

In total, there are 19 games that will count towards the Battle of Waterloo series with the first two contests set for this Sunday, September 10 at Warrior Field as Waterloo and Laurier take on each other in soccer.

The final contest goes on Wednesday, February 7th as the Warriors host the Hawks in men’s hockey at the Kitchener Memorial Aud, the second year this promotional game will be played at the home of the Kitchener Rangers.  In the event of a tie, the winner of this final game will capture the Battle of Waterloo trophy.

“Historically, regardless of the sport or success of the individual roster, these games have been very competitive, and games that fans and student-athletes have circled on their calendar,” said Director of Athletics and Recreation at Waterloo, Roly Webster.  “This series allows our neighbouring Universities to elevate these games and garner the attention in our community that our student-athletes deserve.”

“The Waterloo Region urban definition of the word ‘RIVALRY’ is simple - Laurier Golden Hawks vs. Waterloo Warriors,” declared Laurier’s Director of Athletics and Recreation, Peter Baxter. “Tradition, School Spirit and Pride, is competed for annually, with the victor owning the Prestigious Battle of Waterloo Trophy. It’s a family friendly showcase of excellence, highlighting Canada’s best student-athletes!”
