TORONTO, Ont. (Sunday, September 3, 2017) – The Laurier Golden Hawks women’s soccer displayed their resiliency Sunday afternoon at York Stadium in Toronto, Ont., bouncing back from a disappointing home opener on Saturday to shut down the 2016 OUA West Regular Season Champion York Lions, taking a 1-0 victory back to Waterloo to end their weekend.
Offence was hard to come by on a cool afternoon, with the Hawks’ (1-1-2) defence firmly focused on clamping down on the Lions (0-3-1) after allowing Guelph three goals on Saturday.
With Maxine Murchie (Kitchener, Ont.) out injured, Gagan Parhar (Surrey, B.C.) was able to draw into the starting eleven. She certainly made the most of her opportunity, converting in the 28th on a goal assisted by Nicole Lyon (Kitchener, Ont.).
It must have been a nice moment for Parhar, who was forced to sit out the 2016 OUA season after scoring seven goals during her rookie season. She was named OUA West Division Rookie of the Year in 2015.
The lone goal proved enough for the Hawks.
Ashley Almeida (Burlington, Ont.) picked up her first clean sheet of the season for the purple and gold, who return to University Stadium for the second half of a home-and-home series with the Lions Friday evening. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in front of what should be a raucous O-Week crowd.
