WATERLOO, Ont. (September 2, 2017)- The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's soccer team fell 3-2 to the Guelph Gryphons in Laurier's home opener on Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.
In what was the home opener of the Golden Hawks 2017 season, the Guelph Gryphons slithered by the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks with a 3-2 victory.
Powered by the league's leading goal scorer Jace Kotsopoulos (Burlington, Ont.) and some formidable team chemistry, the Gryphons looked in top form despite the windy and rainy conditions. Kotsopoulos netted two, improving his season total to seven, and in the process helped lead the Gryphons to their third victory of the season.
For the Hawks, it was a pair of forwards who provided the goal scoring with Nikola Miokovic (Kitchener, Ont.) and Luca Pietropaolo (Woodbridge, Ont.) both finding the back of the net. It was a good sign to see the two offensive threats provide some firepower as they both scored their first of the season.
Rocco Strazzella (Woodridge, Ont.) was impressive in goal for the purple and gold, making several diving stops despite the unfortunate result.
With the win, Guelph improves to 3-0-1 on the year, while Laurier now have a record of 0-3.
The Golden Hawks will subsequently head east for an affair with York in Toronto on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 3:15 pm at York Stadium.
