WATERLOO, Ont. (July 7, 2017)- Hanna Burnett, former Golden Hawk WLAX goalie and now associate coach for the 2017-18 season, has been selected as one of eight Canadian umpires to take part in the 2017 FIL Rathbones Women’s Lacrosse World Cup in England
The international competition will be held from July 12th-22nd in Guildford, England. Burnett, a Courtice, Ont. native, is one of nine Canadians that have been selected to take part in the event, as eight umpires and one off-field official will represent Canada across the pond.
The women will join an international officiating team with representatives from nine other countries, comprised of 40 on-field umpires, 17 off-field officials, and a leadership team of six.
Burnett’s impressive lacrosse career with the Golden Hawks began in 2008, where she continued to play five seasons in purple and gold as a goalkeeper. In her first year with the Hawks, not only did she help her team win the OUA Championships after going undefeated in the regular season, but she was also named an OUA Second-Team All-Star, and earned an OUA Academic Achievement Award, in addition to being the Team Rookie of the Year. Her second season saw the team claim silver at the OUA Championships, and she was named an OUA Second-Team All-Star for the second consecutive year. During the 2010-2011 season where the Hawks went 11-1, Burnett continued to be an unmistakable presence in the league, and lead her team to another OUA Championships. Following that season, she was honoured as the OUA Women’s Lacrosse Most Outstanding Player, and was further recognized as an OUA First Team All-Star, as well as earning an OUA Academic Achievement Award and being named the Hawks’ most valuable player. Moreover in her fourth season with the Golden Hawks, Burnett earned the third OUA Academic Achievement Award of her career. During her final season with the Hawks in 2012, Burnett’s graduating year from interuniversity sport saw her as the OUA Women’s Lacrosse Defensive MVP, a First Team All-Star, and as the team’s most valuable player.
Following her time at the World Cup, Burnett will return to Laurier in the fall for the 2017-18 women’s lacrosse season as the Hawks’ Associate Coach, and is looking to help the team repeat the bronze medal win they captured at the OUA Championships last season.
