Eight MFOOT players open year on CFL rosters
2017 draft picks Boateng, N. Onyeka crack Edmonton, Toronto rosters; Golding named to Hamilton practice roster

WATERLOO, Ont. (June 22, 2017) - When the 2017 Canadian Football League (CFL) season kicks off on Thursday night in Montreal, eight former members of the Wilfrid Laurier University men’s football team will grace team rosters across the league, including all three Golden Hawks who were selected in the 2017 draft.

Fifth-round draft picks Kwaku Boateng of Milton, Ont., and Nakas Onyeka of Brampton, Ont., both made the final roster of the Edmonton Eskimos and the Toronto Argonauts respectively, while seventh-round selection Brett Golding of Dunnville, Ont., was named to the practice roster of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The three players join five other former Hawks who have established themselves as regulars across the league including receiver Shamawd Chambers in Edmonton, defensive lineman Ese Mrabure in Saskatchewan, defensive back Courtney Stephen in Hamilton, kicker Ronnie Pfeffer in Toronto and defensive back Chris Ackie in Montreal.

Two former members of the purple and gold will be featured in the CFL’s opening game on Thursday evening as Mrabure and the Roughriders square off against Ackie and the Montreal Alouettes. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be live on TSN.

Other Hawks in action in Week 1 include Boateng and Chambers in B.C. taking on the Lions on Saturday night while Stephen and the Tigers-Cats go head-to-head with Onyeka and Pfeffer of the Argonauts on Sunday afternoon.
