WATERLOO, Ont. (May 26, 2017) - When the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL) open up their 2017 training camp on Sunday, May 28, they will have a little more purple and gold on the field as Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks quarterback Michael Knevel will join the team for training camp as a part of the league’s QB Internship program.
Knevel, the native of Brantford, Ont., becomes the second Laurier pivot to attend the CFL’s Internship program after former quarterback James Fracas also attended Tiger-Cats training camp back in 2014.
“We’re excited that Michael has been given the opportunity with the Tiger-Cats to take part in the CFL QB Internship program,” said head coach Michael Faulds. “Michael will soak up as much information over the next week and return to us a better player.”
“Our quarterback coach Will Finch took advantage of this program twice as a university player, going once to Toronto and once to the Tiger-Cats and advised Michael that it is definitely worth it,” added Faulds. “He may not get many throws in practice, but just sitting in all the meetings and running through the drills is beneficial.”
Knevel is coming off a breakout 2016 season in which he started eight games during the regular season and playoffs, throwing for 2050 yards and 15 touchdowns, while tossing just three interceptions. He was named the MVP of the 109th Yates Cup after completing 22-of-36 passes for 309 yards and three touchdowns while rallying the purple and gold to the largest fourth quarter comeback in Yates Cup history
The Laurier quarterback will be one of three current or former Golden Hawks in Hamilton’s training camp as team veteran and former defensive back Courtney Stephen, as well as 2017 draft pick Brett Golding, will also represent Laurier.
