WATERLOO, Ont. (April 12, 2017) - Over the course of the 2016-17 season, not only were members of the Wilfrid Laurier University women’s basketball team winning on the court, they were also winning in their community thanks to their involvement with the Youth Basketball League.

Spearheaded by fourth year guard Sarah Dillon, seven members of the Golden Hawks, including Melissa Pare, Alexandra Spadaro, Jill Condron, Tayania Siwek-Smith, Brianna Ianazzo and Rachel Woodburn, volunteered an hour of their week to teach young girls the essentials of the game of basketball.

For 20 sessions, beginning in October and running through until March, Dillon and her teammates worked with girls aged 9 to 11 to demonstrate, correct and teach girls how to perform the necessary skills to succeed on the court. The Hawks would also participate in the drills with the girls as well as games during the hour sessions.

"I decided to get involved four years ago to give back to the younger generation of basketball players,” said Dillon on her decision to get involved. “To me, community involvement and development is very important. One of my goals is to impact those young girls and introduce them to Laurier basketball early, so that they can aspire to become a Golden Hawk one day, and show them what it means to be a Golden Hawk. Another goal for me personally is to develop these girls into basketball players and athletes all while having fun.”

The Youth Basketball League, or better known as the YBL, is a house-league organization giving children the opportunity to learn and play basketball at a reasonable price. Sessions are held on Sunday at St. David’s Catholic Secondary School.
