SHERBROOKE, Que. (February 27, 2017) - Two members of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks swimming team had strong showings at the 2017 U SPORTS Championships, hosted by the Sherbrooke Vert et Or, this past weekend.
Rookie Jasmine Raines of Kitchener, Ont., capped off an outstanding freshman year by posting the best result that a Golden Hawk has produced in six year at the national championship. Raines finished sixth in the 200m Breaststroke after posting a time of two minutes, 30.67 seconds. That resulted marked the sixth place finish that Whitney Rich posted for Laurier in the 50m Butterfly back in 2011.
Raines also swam in the ‘B’ final of the 100m Breaststroke where she finished 10th with a time of 1:10.48.
Fourth year veteran Kate Vanderbeek of Hamilton, competed in her fourth national championship and swam in two ‘B’ finals.
Vanderbeek’s best result came in the 50m Backstroke where she tied for 12th after a time of 28.95. She followed that up with a 15th place finish in the 100m Backstroke after touching the wall in 1:03.28.
The results helped Laurier finish 18th of 24 scoring teams at the championships as Raines and Vanderbeek combined to pick up 26.5 points for the purple and gold.
