WATERLOO, Ont. (February 13, 2017) – Swimmers Alec Elliot and Jasmine Raines, both from Kitchener, Ont., have been named the Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 12, 2017.

At the OUA Swimming Championship this past weekend, Raines became the first Golden Hawk since 2010 to win two gold medals at the competition. A first year Health Sciences major, she opened the meet with her first gold medal performance, where she set a new OUA record in the 200m Breaststroke with a time of 2:27.63. She then added her second gold medal in the 100m Breaststroke, which she earned by rallying from half a body length down in the final 25 meters, and ended up winning by three one-hundredths of a second with a time of 1:09.72. In addition, the rookie competed in two other ‘A’ finals for Laurier, where she finished 6th in both the 50m Breaststroke and the 400m Individual Medley, and also paced Laurier's 4x50m medley relay team to a 4th place finish. All in all, Raines contributed 96 of the Golden Hawks’ 206 points at the meet, to help Laurier finish 7th of 12 scoring teams at the championships.

This is Raines’ second time earning Female Athlete of the Week Honours.

Elliot, a first year Biology major, participated in four ‘B’ finals at his very first OUA Championship this past weekend. He won the 'B' final in the 200m Butterfly with a personal-best time of 2:05.20, to finish ninth overall, and missed the cutoff for the U SPORTS Championship by less than a second. As for his other events, he finished 12th in the 100m Backstroke, 13th in the 200m Freestyle and 15th in the 100m Butterfly. Elliot concluded the meet by helping Laurier's 4x200m freestyle relay team to a 6th place finish. In total, he helped earn 46 of Laurier's 124 points, to largely contribute to Laurier’s 10th place finish out of 12 scoring teams at the championship.

This is Elliot’s first time earning Male Athlete of the Week Honours.
