ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (January 23, 2017) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s curling team enjoyed a successful weekend in their first taste of OUA competition this year at the Brock Invitational, co-hosted by the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club and the St. Catharines Curling Club.

Despite missing skip Matthew Hall of Kitchener, Ont., who is representing Ontario at the 2017 Canadian Junior Championships, and lead Russell Cuddie of London, Ont., currently preparing for the 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan, the Hawks ran the table against their opponents, winning all four of their games by a combined score of 27-10.

With a make-shift lineup featuring Jordie Lyon-Hatcher of Ottawa, at skip, Ken Malcolmson of Toronto, at vice, Oliver Campbell of Chatham, Ont., at second and Jordan Visser of Mitchell, Ont., at lead, Laurier opened the bonspiel with a convincing 6-4 victory over the Western Mustangs on Saturday. They followed that up with an 8-2 win over UOIT and a 7-2 victory over RMC later that day.

On Sunday, in a matchup with the host Badgers, the Hawks were in control from the outset and came away with a 6-2 victory.

As a team, the purple and gold curled 75 percent for the weekend, led by Lyon-Hatcher and Campbell, who both shot 78 percent.

Meanwhile, Laurier’s women’s team didn’t enjoy the same success as their male counterparts as they went 2-2 in their first competition of the year.

Led by skip Chelsea Brandwood of Beamsville, Ont., and also featuring vice Brenda Holloway of Missisauga, Ont., second Riley Sandham of St. Catharines, Ont., and lead Kirsten Marshall of Toronto, the Hawks started strong as they posted convincing wins over both Western (12-1) and UOIT (10-4) to open the weekend.

However, the last two games for Laurier didn’t go as well. The purple and gold dropped a 7-2 decision to McMaster before closing the bonspiel with an 8-3 loss to the host Badgers.

The next action for both of Laurier’s varsity teams will be the OUA Championships, hosted by the UOIT Ridgebacks, from February 16-20 in Oshawa, Ont.

The Hawks junior varsity teams will compete at the McMaster Invitational this upcoming weekend, January 28-29, at the Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club in Dundas, Ont.
