Two Golden Hawks among Athlete of the Year nominees
Former swimmer Alec Elliot, along with women's soccer alum Alyssa Lagonia, among the 2017 nominees
WATERLOO, Ont. (April 11, 2018) - Two athletes with ties to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks were among the 12 nominees for the 2017 Kitchener, Waterloo and area Athlete of the Year award as announced on Tuesday.
Current Laurier student and former swimmer Alec Elliot along with women’s soccer alumna Alyssa Lagonia are both in the running for the 20th edition of the award.
Elliot, a native of Kitchener, Ont., who has been nominated for the award four times, is one of Canada’s top para-swimmers. A member of the swim team in 2016-17, he was named the Male Para Swimmer of the Year in Ontario as well as three first-place finishes at the Canadian championships in August.
Lagonia, also originally from Kitchener, Ont., is nominated for the award for a fifth time, with her first nomination coming for her performance in 2008. The midfielder captained her Swiss club, FC Neunkirch, to the 2017 league championship.
The award will be presented on May 16 at Bingemans.
