WATERLOO, Ont. (April 9, 2018) - Wilfrid Laurier University's Department of Athletics and Recreation recognized 17 award recipients at the annual Student Appreciation Brunch hosted by the Turret on Thursday, April 5.
This past year was extremely successful for Athletics and Recreation. Our Athletic Complex averaged 19,000 swipes into the facility per week, the highest amount of Group Ex passes were sold, dance hosted 4 beautiful showcases selling over 2000 tickets, Intramurals introduced table tennis as a new sport to the program, our Events team hosted 3 successfull school day events, and many other successes were shared within the department. It was with the hard work and dedication of our student team that this was made possible. Our student team spent countless hours working towards every service that was provided to allow for the most positive experience for all participants.
The awards from the brunch were as follows:
The Don Smith Award recognizes a student who has made a lasting contribution to the recreation program. This year the award was presented to a pair of recipients, Nick McCready and Sean Bureau. McCready and Bureau are currently the Intramural Co-Coordinators and have both held various positions in the department during their time here.
The Outstanding Leadership for Customer Service Award recognizes a student who exemplifies outstanding customer service through opportunities to improve service, implement new service ideas, impresses customers and is well informed about programs and services. This year's recipient was Quinn Welsh. Welsh is currently the Youth Programs Coordinator.

Four other student staff were recognized at our annual Athletic Banquet Wednesday, April 5th. Erin Dawtrey, current Concessions Coordinator, was the recipient of the Dean Esther Brandon Award. The award is given to a female student who has devoted much time and effort to the growth and promotion of Athletics. Nick McCready, current Intramural Co-Coordinator, was the recipient of the Bill Haggstrom Award. This award is given to a male student has has devoted much time and effort to the growth and promotion of athletics. Maya Day, current Intramural Basketball Referee, was the recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award for Women's Basketball. Stephanie Elsey, current Brand Ambassador, was the recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award for Women's Golf.
The Department of Athletics and Recreation would like to congratulate all our students on another successful year. To all those graduating this year, we wish you luck in all your endeavours.
