TORONTO, Ont. (February 26, 2017) - Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks swimmers Jasmine Raines
and Connor Norval
both put together impressive performances at the U SPORTS Championships, hosted by the Toronto Varsity Blues, this past weekend at Varsity Pool.
Norval, a rookie from Richmond Hill, Ont., swam four personal best times at his first appearance at the national championships. The economics major opened up the meet on Thursday with a 38th place finish in the 200m freestyle thanks to a time of one minute, 57.47 seconds. He also placed 43rd in the 100m butterfly on Thursday after posting a time of 58.32.
He followed up those performances with a pair of 29th place showings in the 200m butterfly and the 1500m freestyle. Norval posted a time of 2:06.96 in the butterfly on Friday before finishing in 16.17.34 in the freestyle on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Raines, who won bronze in the 200m breaststroke on Friday
, also swam in two ‘B’ finals during the championships. On Thursday she finished 12th in the 100m breaststroke thanks to a time of 1:10.94 before finishing 13th in the 50m breaststroke on Saturday after touching the wall in 33.17.
Raines also competed in the 200m individual medley on Saturday where she placed 31st after a time of 2:28.97.
Her three finals swims in the breaststroke events accumulated 56 points in the women’s team standings for the Golden Hawks to place Laurier 20th overall amongst competing universities.
