Jewer named OUA Female Athlete of the Week
BURLINGTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Investors Group Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by 2XU, for the period ending February 20, 2018.

Male Athlete of the Week – Mike Rocca (Sarnia, Ont.) – 5th Year – Windsor Lancers

If there was ever a way to close out your final regular season, Mike Rocca did just that, and in doing so, the Windsor Lancers veteran has been named the OUA Male Athlete of the Week.

Rocca, along with the Lancers as a whole, had a tremendous weekend to close out his five year career in a Windsor jersey. Led by the Sarnia, Ont. native, the Lancers came away with a 91-81 win over the Waterloo Warriors Friday night and followed that up on Saturday with another impressive win, stunning the No.2 Brock Badgers 96-83.

Against the Warriors, who the Lancers will do battle with once again in their first round playoff game, Rocca put up 24 points, went 100% from the free throw line, and rounded out his contributions with 10 rebounds, 8 assists, 6 steals, and a block. He continued his outstanding play against Brock one night later, finishing the game with 27 points on 58% shooting, 5 assists, 3 steals, 4 rebounds, and another flawless night from the charity stripe.

Female Athlete of the Week – Kaitlin Jewer (Ajax, Ont.) – 3rd Year – Laurier Golden Hawks

The province’s biggest stage was no match for Kaitlin Jewer in her first year on the Golden Hawks varsity team, as the Laurier skip not only helped her rink earn the women’s title, but she also earns OUA Female Athlete of the Week honours.

In her first OUA championship, Jewer guided the Golden Hawks to a 4-3 round robin record. In the quarterfinals, she made two great hits; one to tie the game in the 6th end and one to send the game to an extra in the 8th. Laurier went on to win in the extra, taking down the defending national and OUA champions, Laurentian.

In the semifinal, Jewer made two great draws in the 3rd to set up an early steal of two, while finishing the first half of the game at 100%. She made a clutch draw in the last end to send the game to an extra, where Laurier took down last year’s national silver medallists, the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

In the final, Jewer, who curled 74% for the championship, made a great freeze and tap in the 7th to set up a steal and put Laurier up by one heading to the last end; a lead they would not diminish, as the Ajax, Ont. native skipped the purple and gold to their sixth OUA title in eight years.
